1. St Enodoc Golf Club
Fend off fierce competition for the number 1 spot, not only one of the best British Courses but in the World!
St Enodoc’s is consistently the talk of returning clients and it’s easy to see why.
St Enodoc is just a great link Course set in the picturesque town of Rock, overlooking the Camel Estuary and the famous fishing town of Padstow.
It will be very hard to find a golf course that is so consistent all year round, in perfect condition.
One of the highlights of this course is the famous Himalayan bunker on the 6th hole. Rest assured going forward is not an option from here!
The links designed by James Braid meander through and through the dunes. The rugged thin link stands ideally positioned ready to devour any wrong shot and the fast-paced fairways ensure every shot on a bad line is routed into the troublesome bunker.
Green is wavy and there is nothing to be ashamed of pure. You won’t find a bobble on this court and a well-hit online putt will find its way to the bottom of the cup. Confident in running it if it looks good.
2. Saunton Golf Club
If the Open Championship were to head southwest, it is widely accepted that Saunton East would be in a prime position to host.
The beautifully designed Saunton East link is situated on the North Devon coastline and is widely regarded as one of the best golf courses in the UK.
Saunton has a great history of hosting fantastic events including the Women’s Amateur and Amateur Championships. The winners here include a line of famous names, including Sergio Garcia!
East Course is ranked No.32 in the Golf World’s. And there is only one Club with 2 Link Courses in a better place in the whole country and that is St Andrews! Pretty good compliment.
From the opening tee stroke of the elevated tee to the uphill approach to the clubhouse, Saunton will deliver a full 18 memorable holes.
3. Burnham & Berrow Golf Club
Burnham is the northernmost of the Atlantic Links network. This Somerset club has played host to many prestigious professional and amateur championships throughout its history and the names of famous winners are strewn across the leaderboards; including Mr. J Rose.
Burnham and Berrow is a traditional links layout that takes you 9 holes along the shoreline and 9 holes a little further inland to the clubhouse.
There’s no escaping this trail that meanders through elevation changes, bunkers, and mounds to form Somerset’s finest layout.
Par is a highly respected score here for any starting player. Wavy green means this Course can be set to be played in a variety of ways, and this is especially true for par 3.
4. St Mellion Golf Club
The best garden course in the South West and one of the highest-rated in the UK. The St Mellion is one of Jack Nicklaus’ finest creations and his genius is evident as you pass through 18 holes of uninterrupted brilliance.
Courses were picking the driver off the tee on par 4 and 5 respectively will not work. Jack has designed the course for the golfer’s mindset. Placement is key and this starts from the 2nd tee (par 5) where long iron/wood will be the only option for mounting holes. There are no weak holes on this golf course and certainly, no one gets bored playing here.
The final hole is dogleg right par 4 where your second shot, at the undulating green and sheltered by the water, is played in the shadow of a grandstand-style luxury hotel.
With the grand hotel structure beside you, it’s hard not to feel the winning feeling here like Langer, Olazabal, and a man named Seve.
In all, St Mellion has hosted 12 European Tour and Amateur Championship events. Few Courses in the Country boast of this kind of pedigree and course, no other Course in the Southwest comes close to this record.
5. Trevose Golf Club
Trevose Country Club is probably the biggest golf name in the Southwest. Another famous Colts design, The Championship Course spans 7,079 yards of rugged trail. Host for the Legend Links Championship, European Seniors Tour (Staysure Tour) event.
Standing on the first elevated tee you’ll get one of the best views in golf. The Atlantic Ocean will blow you away (if the wind link doesn’t get there first). The court consists of two 9-hole loops, typical of the Colt design. The 9 hole front offers great views of the Atlantic, close to the seafront. The back 9 holes pull you deeper inland, but no less exciting, the real test of golf right down to the clubhouse.
The last 3 holes are always tough to play, a long par 3 16, followed by a par 4, 17 which has a narrow drive and the greens are well protected. The 18th hole played long, gradually up the hill back to the clubhouse. Out of bounds towering on the left, the fairway sloping from right to left.
With accommodation in 4/5 star hotels, apartments, and inns, this is one of the most popular courses in the South West and even in the UK.
6. Saunton Golf Club
The little brother of the East Course in this great place found his way onto this list at a very respectable number 6.
It opened to play in its current incarnation in 1973, although it was an idea first conceived before WW2. Saunton West provides a good challenge and certainly not just a companion route to the East.
Stretching to par 71 and 6,600 yards, this Course demands solid tee-shot placement and greens, full commitment, and respect. His 4 of 5 par 3 stretches for over 190 yards and with a regular link, a light breeze can play a wide range of distances.
West may play a second role after East Course in many minds, however, bear in mind that his big brother is mentioned as a possible Open host. On its own, West is a fantastic golf course; Saunton is truly a 2-Course place and both deserve to appear on this list.
7. Royal North Devon Golf Club
Royal North Devon is where it all started for British golf. The “St Andrews” of England opened for play in 1864 and is located between the Estuary, Atlantic Ocean, and Westward Ho!.
This traditional link is still herded by sheep which creates sprint races, and mounds of fairways along the track.
The greatest refuge here is the wind. The pitch is relatively flat and open to the elements. The high, spinning ball flight here won’t do much to tame this 7,000+ yard link.
RND is not only a good Course but also one of real historical value.
A visit to the club museum is worth your time alone. The award boards show the names of famous amateurs and professionals from across the long history of the game.
The club is also experienced in terms of awards. Golf World lists the RND as one of the top 100 courses in the World that true golfers must play. The course has also hosted many events, the most recent of which is the prestigious West England Championships.
Several difficult decisions have been made in compiling this list. Putting RND into a large number of these is certainly not one of them.
8. East Devon Golf Club
Several golf courses provide a dramatic and memorable setting for a round of golf. This clifftop heathland course has been carved through thick scrub and thorn bushes and features fast-paced link-style fairways that allow for year-round play.
The East Devon Golf Course is nationally renowned as one of the top golf destinations. This was recently backed by the Top 100 which has placed East Devon in the top 60 Courses in the UK.
Peter Alliss is a huge East Devon fan and is quoted as saying that the 16th tee gives players the “best view in golf”.
Of course, not the longest golf course at over 6300 yards, East Devon is decisive proof that a course doesn’t need length to prove quality. However, if the Course is set in an area of outstanding natural beauty, what do you expect.
