Shimla’s food scene surprised me more than its viewpoints

I arrived in Shimla expecting to spend most of my time looking forward to viewpoints, walking through pine forests and adoring the Himalayan landscape. The hill station is known for mountain scenery, colonial architecture, and refreshing weather, so my expectations for food remained as a filler between sightseeing. What caught me off guard was the realisation that the meals I enjoyed became some of the most memorable experiences of the journey.

Popular cafes in Shimla that have a piece of my heart

Shimla doesn’t disappoint travellers in search of diverse eateries. From local cuisine to continental favourites, you can find every kind of food served in beautiful interiors.

Cafe Shimla Times

If you are looking for that one cosy corner in the heart of Shimla, this cafe has to be the place. I wanted a dreamy setup with a picturesque view welcoming me to soak in the beauty of Shimla, I just got that. And when it comes to the food, you can choose from a gala spread, from pizza to pasta. I will any time love to revisit Cafe Shimla Times for that old world charm and blissful, scenic views.

Brews & Books Cafe

Brews & Books Cafe is the kind of place I would happily spend an entire afternoon in, especially with a good book and a warm cup of coffee. The cosy interiors and relaxed setting make it a lovely spot to slow down after exploring Shimla. I also enjoyed having something light to eat while taking in the peaceful atmosphere. It is the sort of cafe I would return to when I want good food, coffee and some quiet time.

Wood Street Cafe

Wood Street Cafe instantly caught my attention with its warm interiors and inviting ambience. I loved settling into the comfortable setting after a day of walking around Shimla, with a cup of coffee and something delicious to eat. The menu has plenty of familiar favourites, making it an easy choice when dining with friends or family. I would definitely keep this cafe on my list for a relaxed meal in Shimla.

Restaurants in Shimla which make your taste buds happy

Shimla has plenty of restaurants where a good meal becomes an important part of the travel experience. From traditional Himachali flavours to Chinese and multi-cuisine dishes, these places offer something different for every craving.

Himachali Rasoi

Himachali Rasoi was one of the places I wanted to visit to experience the authentic flavours of the hills. The traditional setting adds to the experience, while dishes such as siddu and other Himachali preparations bring local flavours to the table. I loved how the meal felt like a small introduction to the region’s food culture. It is a place I would happily revisit whenever I am craving a taste of Himachal.

Amayaa Restaurant

Amayaa Restaurant is a great choice when I want a comfortable dining experience with plenty of options to choose from. The elegant interiors create a pleasant setting for a relaxed meal, while the menu features a mix of Indian and international favourites. I enjoyed the combination of a calm atmosphere and satisfying food. It is the kind of restaurant that fits easily into a leisurely evening in Shimla.

Chopsticks

Chopsticks is where I would head when a plate of comforting Asian food is on my mind. The restaurant has a lively yet welcoming atmosphere, and its menu features popular Chinese, Tibetan and other Asian-inspired dishes. I particularly enjoyed the idea of pairing the food with Shimla’s cool weather. For me, it makes a great stop when I want to take a break from the usual North Indian fare.

The pace of dining matched the pace of the town

What I appreciated most was that meals never felt rushed. Even at hotels in Shimla, people gathered over tea, conversations continued even after plates were cleared, and cafés encouraged visitors to linger around and interact rather than move on quickly.

That slower rhythm reflected Shimla itself. The town rewards those who take their time, whether walking along The Ridge, browsing local shops or settling into a quiet café with views of the surrounding hills. Instead of treating food as a break between attractions, I began planning my days around places I wanted to eat.

The bottom line

Shimla certainly offers beautiful viewpoints, but it was the food that shaped my memories of the town. Traditional Himachali dishes, welcoming cafés and lively local markets revealed a side of the destination that panoramic landscapes alone could not capture. Every meal gave me another reason to stay out a little longer, turning common breaks into memorable moments that I can treasure forever. Looking back, I recognised that the best way to understand Shimla was not only through its famous views but also through the culinary expereinces, conversations and unhurried dining experiences that made the town feel lived in rather than simply visited.
